HISTORY/PERSONALITY

December 4, 1996: Kang Mina is born on Jeju Island, South Korea to Kang Dongwook and Kang Minhee.

March, 2001: Mina's father gets a better paying job in Seoul; the whole family moves with him.

Late August, 2001: Mina enters kindergarten.

Late August, 2002: Mina enters primary school. She's a happy child, with quite the appetite.

Early September, 2009: Mina enters middle school. This doesn’t come without strife, however, as some of the boys and girls in her class have made it a point to tease her for her abnormally large(r) ears. This causes her to withdraw, contrary to her usual happy and outgoing self, and by the end of middle school, she’s doing her schoolwork from home to avoid the inevitable teasing and graduates a year early in 2011.

Post-Middle School graduation, 2011: Mina’s father gets another job in Canada. The family moves over the summer, before Mina starts high school. It’s supposed to be a fresh start.

August, 2011: Mina starts high school in Canada after taking a summer of English classes; her English is still accented, but it’s still her ears that earn a few snickers in class. Mina meets Somi, a girl in her class who, thank the gods, knows Korean. Somi is her first friend since grade school. She helps with Mina’s English, which greatly improves over the next few years. The bullying has resurfaced — teenagers are downright cruel — and one afternoon, Mina skips class to take a run. The fresh air will do her some good, right? This becomes a habit, her daily runs often going on for hours and gradually taking her further into the Canadian wilderness.

That Fateful Day, 2012: Mina is on her way back from a run when she encounters the little creature that effectively turns her reality upside down. She’s tripped and startled something that, to her, looks like a weasel — she doesn’t know any better — and when it bites her, she’s mostly just shocked. It’s gone before she can properly react, but she feels the effects of the bite before she gets home — she doesn’t feel well, like she’s running a fever, and skips dinner to call it a night early.

The Next Day, 2012: Mina wakes up, not as human Kang Mina, but as exceptionally small pine marten Kang Mina. One look in the full-length mirror, and she’s already huffing about the fact that in this form, her ears are still abnormally large. She takes the transformation rather well, but it takes much longer to learn to control it. She doesn’t tell anyone about what's happened.

Post-Turning, 2012: What follows after is a lot of research to learn as much as she can about the supernatural world, earning a few contacts in the supernatural world in Canada. But she still doesn’t tell anyone.

Graduation, 2015: Mina is still shy and reserved, but she’s gotten back to being comfortable with those she's close to, opening up to her parents about school, though she still doesn't tell them she can turn into a small furry critter. It’s hard when Somi tells her that her family is moving to Hong Kong, but she sees her off with a teary-eyed smile and a warm hug.

September, 2015: Mina attends her first year of college in Canada and continues to educate herself on the side about the supernatural. By the end of the school year in early 2016, she starts to feel off and one of her contacts informs her that the Canadian nodes are dying, tells her that there’s solace in Hong Kong. She makes the life-changing decision to move for her second year of school. (And for her well-being.) Her parents are puzzled, but they support her decision, and an agreement is made that if she keeps her grades up, they’ll continue to pay for her school and give her a monthly allowance.

July, 2016: Mina makes the move to Hong Kong of her own accord to attend HKU. She chooses to live on campus to save her parents some money and only uses her allowance when she needs to. She feels better than she has in a while, and she chalks it up to the working nodes in the city, but she’s still wary.

September, 2016: Mina starts classes at HKU.

ABILITY
→ A pine marten with light to dark brown coloring. In this form, she's small and slender, only about 1.5 ft/0.5 m and 1 lb/0.5 kg. Generally, she has control over when she transforms, the only disturbance in that routine being when she gets too overwhelmed, whether emotionally, mentally, or physically. Because of the marten genes, she's also an exceptionally skilled climber.

→ Like most shifters, she's exceptionally strong, with enhanced senses, healing, and an increased body temperature. She doesn't like to show these off by any means, but she is willing to use them to her advantage if it means getting out of a slippery situation. Allergy to silver.

Facts & Trivia

→ Mina has a love for just about any food you can put in front of her, and she has a habit of stowing away rations for when she feels like she might need them -- this can be attributed to her marten qualities, where they stow food away for winter. Because of this, she often gets stressed when she can't find food or when she, for any reason, has to wait to eat.

→ Despite her warm body temperature, during colder weather, she tends to be a bit more sluggish than usual and tries to burrow into the blankets or the nearest significant heat source. She can never be too warm. This is also because of marten activity lessening during winter months out of a need to survive.

→ She's loved wildlife since before she started on her runs in high school, which is what prompted her to choose her major in Ecology. She wants to be a wildlife conservation officer back in Canada.

→ When she isn't studying, she enjoys playing games of any variety -- computer, phone, console, you name it.

→ Her love for running still holds true as well, and she usually takes a morning run in the park every morning before her classes start.
